Matterport is not the only solution when it comes to choosing a virtual tour creation software. While it's the most popular, that doesn't mean it's the best. Indeed, this virtual tour design program has its flaws.
1. No possibility of post-processing
Because the virtual tour is created within the application, the photos cannot be edited, which does not produce optimal quality of the 360° photos. Using a software other than Matterport, 360 photos are saved to a memory card (not in an app). It is then possible to process them to adjust brightness, white balance, sharpness, calibration, and more. It may not be necessary to process these photos for the sale of a property, but for a virtual tour of a business it is important that the quality is optimal.
2. Too many anchor points
The biggest limitation of Matterport is that we have to take a photo every 1.5 meters or less, which creates an unnecessary number of captures. Navigating through a large house and having to click several times to get to another room is not very user-friendly. Needing so many captures also takes longer to shoot at the property. By creating a virtual tour manually, we can ensure that the user experience is pleasant.
3. Dollhouse of questionable quality
Their "dollhouse" is not faultless. The feeling we get when we see it isn't exactly "wow". Matterport's artificial intelligence brings negligible quality to the 3D design. In addition, it is not easy to navigate through the dollhouse.
4. Lots of mistakes
Since the software uses artificial intelligence, it often happens to encounter alignment errors. These errors require you to remake certain scans in the property, which takes more time during the session. Manually building a virtual tour from A to Z dramatically reduces the chances of errors and ensures optimal compliance.
5. No exterior
Matterport is designed for indoor virtual tours only. It is possible to add a 360° photo to a virtual tour, but it is not possible to take exterior photos and include them in the immersive 3D virtual tour. So, if your property or local has a sublime terrace, it cannot be included in 3D, only as a 360° photo added separately.
These are a few reasons why we don't use Matterport, but rather a high-end (and local!) software that allows us to completely create the virtual tours with the best possible experience.
